CPDRC's Thriller

Over 1,500 inmates of a Philippines Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center re-enact Michael Jackson's Thriller music video. They've also done a few other re-enactments. See below.
Radio Ga-ga, by Queen.
I Will Follow Him, from the Sister Act movie.
Dayang Dayang - Sister Act 2

  1. The first thing this proves is that Michael Jackson is no more talented than the average Philipino criminal, but I think the significance of these videos goes way beyond humour.
Assuming this is real, there are some unanswered questions; was this the idea of the inmates or are they doing this under threat? It is difficult to tell whether they are enjoying it or going through the motions. I'm sure there is quite a bit of both.
It is fascinating that they got such a level of teamwork and cooperation in a prison; not an environment normally known for encouraging such behavior. To have that many inmates in a open area without a riot seems amazing. Then again, maybe I've seen too many episodes of OZ and things are different in the Phillipines.
If it was the inmates' idea, it shows the ingenuity and resilience of the human psyche, but I suspect that it was all under the command of a prison warden who is getting his kicks by watching. Either way, it definitely illustrates the enormous amounts of energy and human potential that is rotting away in the world's prisons.
